Ebola – How to Prevent the Deadly Disease from Entering Into India

It could amount to the biggest epidemic of the world, if Ebola made its entry into India and if we ignored or became callous about it. As a country with rudimentary health infrastructure, a large poor population, outbursts of slums around almost every big city, and poor sanitation facilities, we sit on a pandemonium if even a single case of Ebola is tested positive in India.

What is Ebola and how does it spread?

Ebola Virus: Symptoms, Treatment, and PreventionEbola is a deadly virus which attacks the immunology of the human body by attacking the inner lining of the blood vessels and spreading the virus to all the vital organs of the body resulting in the death of the patient, if not treated in time. It has its origins in Central Africa but the three countries of West Africa that are bearing the worst brunt of it now are Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea.

It spreads by the mucous of the body primarily through sweat, saliva, semen, urine, and wet clothing.

How serious is the Threat of Ebola to the world?

According to the World health Organization it sees Ebola to cause major catastrophes to human lives if not controlled with strong measures world over. Although at present it is only parts of Africa that are the reservoirs of Ebola but this could be spread at an alarming state if ignored by the other nations.

So far approximately 9000 cases of Ebola have been reported of which more than 50% have been fatal. The WHO warns that by the first week of December 2014 it expects 5000 to 10000 new cases of Ebola to be reported every week. This could be dangerous to the human society.

What steps the Government is taking towards preventing Ebola from entering into India?

India is a country of 1.2 billion people. To control any kind of disease here is a herculean task and controlling a dangerous viral like Ebola here could derive the health workers and the government authorities to sleepless nights.

However, there are certain measures the Indian Government has taken to fight Ebola into entering India.

  • The Government has placed screening protocols at International airports
  • It has established 24 hours Ebola help lines staffed by doctors
  • There is an authorization of 10 new Ebola testing labs
  • It has designated hospitals in major cities as Ebola management centers and formed rapid response team in every state
  • The state teams are being trained by the WHO and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and will disseminate their training to local first responders.

What is needed to spread the disease from spreading and stopping?

Even though concrete steps are being taken by the Government to control Ebola but this may not be enough. Certain measures are needed further to control the disease;

  • More diagnostic labs are needed for such a huge population like India
  • Private hospitals along with Government hospitals should also come forward in becoming centers for controlling Ebola
  • There should be a surplus supply of gloves, masks, goggles and other preventive equipment to guard against Ebola
  • People should be informed about the symptoms and control of the disease
  • There appear to be several anti viral drugs that appear to be active against Ebola and transfusions from Ebola survivors’ who have fully recovered
  • The Government of India should work with the manufacturers of these anti bodies who have helped in curing the Ebola victims

A deadly disease like Ebola should be prevented from spreading and for a country like India we have to be on our toes to guard it to save precious human lives.

GPC Medical Limited in its drive for better health for the citizens of India supports the initiative taken by the Government to guard against Ebola from entering into India. It also urges the people to be cautious against any of the symptoms of Ebola and to take preventive measures at the first instance.
