All you need to know about Medical Implants

A medical device made to support biological structures which get damaged, helps in replacing biological structures which are missing, or helps in enhancing biological structures which already exist is called an implant. Medical implants are devices made by man transplanted for biomedical tissues. Titanium, apatite and silicone are biomedical materials which are used in the surface of implants for contacting the body. These are used according to the requirement of function. Cochlear implants and artificial implants are electronics which are used in some of the implants whereas, some implants as per the requirement are bioactive such as devices which are drug delivery. Let’s discuss some of the common implants which even we are familiar with and which help people to heal from their injuries,

Medical Implants

Can You Get Artificial Hips?

The medical joints or devices used in surgeries for the replacement of hips are called artificial hips. They are implanted according to the need and requirement of patients, that is, there can be a half as well as full hip replacements. The artificial hips contain almost 60 types, so you can choose according to your own need.

Yes there are Different Types of Breast Implants:

Devices used for reconstructing, enhancing or reshaping the size of breast of a woman are called breast implants. Breast implants are of three types:

  • Composite
  • Saline
  • Silicone

You can get the kind of breast implants you want according to your requirement.

The Two Types of Heart Pacemakers:

Patients with heart diseases or with conditions causing abnormal heart rhythms go for heart pacemakers. Now, heart pacemakers comes in two types. One in which chambers of the heart are triggered and the second one is used to control the rate and rhythm of the heart by sending an electrical pulse to it. Both these devices come under medical implants, they are implanted under a person’s skin near his heart to control the heartbeat.

Artificial Knees for Support

The real knee or joint of a patient gets changed by an artificial knee according to the requirement of the patient. That is whether he wants a total knee replacement surgery or wants to go for half replacement. This category has also several types, so you are given options which you can choose according to your need.

Artificial Eye for Different Requirements:

A surgery is the one where patients eyes lens are replaced by artificial eyes. Artificial eyes have four types depending on the requirements and need conditions of the patients. The types are as following:

  • Mono-focal Lenses
  • Astigmatic Lenses
  • Mono-vision Lenses
  • Multi-focal Lenses

Each of these lenses offer visual result of different size.

Ear Tubes as Saviour

Patient’s ears that can’t be treated by medication are fixed by ear tubes which are used diminish the damages caused in ears. How are they implanted? They are inserted into the drums of ears, these are basically small tubes. A variety of them is available in the market. From which some of them are used for temporary purposes while others are designed to treat long-term chronic conditions. All these types depend on the patients requirements and how much need they require for this.

Operating Tables that Save Lives

Operating tables are a staple requirement for a surgery or medical procedure. It is as important as the doctor. Having been present since the 19th century, operating tables have evolved a lot with technology and with the evolution; there have been different types of operating tables developed for different kinds of surgeries.

Operating Tables

One crucial side of operating tables is that does it stay the same in every case and provide the patient immense comfort and be easy for the doctor to use according to the surgery. The solution to providing the right table is to know and understand what is needed when and use it accordingly. A head trauma case would require a neuro-based table rather than a general surgery operating table.

Types of Operating Tables:

General Surgery Table:

This is the most commonly known tables and is best suited for general surgery and smaller operations. It allows easy patient contact. But what the table must have is easy accessibility and adjustment. To be able to adjust the table high or low and to allow the doctors to have focus and access to the part to operate on, so there must be good angle adjustment. It should also have imaging support as surgeons are largely using minimal invasive techniques, especially in general operations. Great advancements have also been made in size with the availability of sizes for infants, children, adults and even obese patients.

Neurology Table:

These tables have also been especially developed that are of great help in head traumas. It provides great access to the head only and designed as such that the rest of the body and neck area lay comfortably of the patient. These operating tables also are designed to give doctors particular control over their patients’ movement. These tables also have a variety of positioning options as required by the surgery like lateral slide and tilt, elevation and back section too.

Orthopedic Tables:

These are entirely different and very important. Fracture tables are entirely different that help to fix fractures of different part of the body. Then there are different tables for hip replacements, rib cage and lung are surgeries. One important aspect for these tables is to have plain access for image intensifiers and X-rays to see development and precision.

Urology/Cysto Tables:

Urology, cyst-based and gynecology tables are entirely different. They need to be comfortable, primarily and need adjustment options and angles for the doctor as these positions may be painful and even awkward. There needs to be less movement and tray options for quick treatment and access.

With all of the above mentioned types, there are also types based on area specification, like types of cardio based operating tables and there are further kinds of these tables. They need to be technologically advanced. Have arm resting options for the doctors and staff for longer procedures and hand rest. They also need to be accessible to radiology and x-rays as to wasting less time. And with the rise of robotic surgeries which are still being tested, there is a need of hydraulic tables that accommodates as per the patient’s body, incision and robot’s sleek movement.

Diagnostic Tools Every Medical Practitioner Needs to Know About

Common Types of Diagnostic Medical Devices:

Medicine has advanced to such an extent that it has answers to everything. Since the olden times doctors and medical professionals have focused their valuable resources on proper diagnosis for an effective treatment. In this endeavor, the chain of events start off from using proper tools for diagnosis. Enlisted here are some of the most profound diagnostic devices that are used by doctors worldwide:

Medical Diagnostic Instruments

  1. Stethoscopes:

It is the most efficient tool that helps attaining vitals and substantial features of the patient at hand. They are essentially the most significant equipment that help in assessing heart sounds, heart beats, breath sounds etc.

Diagnosis:

  • Pneumonia
  • Bronchitis
  • Heart palpitations
  • Heart disease
  • Arrhythmia
  • Heart valve issues

There are electronic stethoscopes which are devised to closely examine low-pitched heart sounds and high pitched pulmonary sounds.

  1. Sphygmomanometers:

For accurate measurement of blood pressure Sphygmomanometers are the key tools used by nurses and doctors. Careful evaluations and fluctuations of blood pressure have been made possible by this device.  Number chronic and acute diseases have shown an impeccable variation in blood pressure.  Sphygmomanometer helps in examining the patient and predicting the next move towards an adequate remedy.

Diagnosis:

  • Diabetes
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Artery hardening
  • Arterial plaque
  • Hypotension

Types:

There are two types of Sphygmomanometer.

  • The electrical sphygmomanometers or Aneroid Sphygmomanometers are not reliable in their readings. This variation makes it quite difficult for the physicians to regulate their diagnosis
  • The manual type sphygmomanometer is usually favored due to the universal accepted optimum readings.
  1. Ophthalmoscopes:

They are used to examine the eye with precision. Most ophthalmologists have acquired this device in order to accurately translate their suspicion with accurate diagnosis. Seeing is believing; and with an ophthalmoscope you can analyze the eye with ease.

Diagnosis:

  1. Bacterial infections
  2. Detached retinas
  3. Glaucoma

Types:

  • Direct Ophthalmoscopes give a magnified image of the eye in an upright position. It is placed very close to the patient eye in order to get correct results.
  • Indirect ophthalmoscope, unlike the direct one produces an inverted image of the eye. In order to achieve this, the device is placed at 15-30 inches distance from the patient’s eye. This device shows more potent results when confirming a cataract.
  1. Otoscopes:

If you are having hearing problems or any discomfort in your ear, the physician would probably equip himself with an otoscope for examination purposes. It is used to give an image of the ear canal. The lens magnifies the image while the doctor views the inside of your ear.

Diagnosis:

  • Ear infections
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Causes of vertigo or dizziness
  • Meniere’s Disease
  • Swimmers Ear

There is a light assisting the physician to give a clear idea. The light and the magnifying power of lens help in examining the outer and middle ear. The doctor is ascertained to always dispose off the speculum part of the otoscope in order to avoid spreading of infection and for hygiene purposes.

How Well Do You Know About Your Intramedullary Nail

Intramedullary Nail:

The orthopedic surgeon makes a small notch in the skin to the tissue nearest to the one end of the broken bone to straighten up the fractured bones and to provide maximum healing base and puts a rod-like device shaped like a nail into the cleft center of the bone, called the medullary cavity. The intramedullary nail forms an unconstrained internal prop to sustain the fracture. All this procedure is usually done for three types of fractures;

Intramedullary Interlocking Nails

A Tibia Plateau Fracture:

It’s a bone fracture which causes the deterioration in the continuity of the bone appearing in shinbone called the tibial plateau. It affects the working of the knee joint and the substantiality of the motion. In this part of bone surgeon always insert intramedullary nail for strength and support of the bone.

A Femoral Shaft Fracture:

Our Thigh bone called femur, is the longest and strongest bone exist in our body. The part of femur that is long and straight is called the femoral fracture when there is a breakage happened in any of this longest area of the bone, it is a femoral shaft fracture area where the intramedullary nail is installed to provide support to the thigh bone.

A Humerus Fracture:

It is the upper arm bone injury. The upper arm bone is called humerus that connects the shoulder with the elbow. Humerus fractures may be of three kinds.

Clavicle Fracture: A fracture in collar bone that begins at the neck and extends to the shoulder, these fractures happens due to the fall and direct hit. When we get a clavicle fracture, then we may have a difficulty in raising the arm.

Proximal Humerus Fracture: The fracture at the top of the humerus bone is called the humerus fracture. The proximal humerus fracture affects the shoulder joint with high intensity and its difficult and time taking to heal.

There are 2 types of Proximal Humerus Fracture:
  • A shaft fracture disturbed the middle portion of the humerus bone.
  • A distal humerus fracture affects the bottom end of the humerus, near the elbow joint.

A humeral fracture can often be managed without surgery. Factors that control the requirement for surgery include the amount of displacement, the involvement of the cartilage in the joint, and the age and activity level of the patient.

Scapula Fracture: A flat triangular bone located in the upper back part of the shoulder is called scapula. It provides the major connections between the arm and the chest. These fractures are not so common. They most commonly happen in men. This type of injury typically has continued to other damages, some are nerve injuries, rib fractures, or lung injuries.

Advantages of Intramedullary Nail

  • It provides strength and flexible support to the bones.
  • Exactly straighten the fractured bones for faster mending and lead to weight bearing very steadily.
  • Motion in joints starts earlier and stiffness gets reduced.
  • It encourages more alike motion in uninjured muscles and other nearby joints.

New agreements reduce pricing and increase access to neonatal resuscitation equipment in low and middle-income countries

Press Release Published on May 17, 2016

clintonhealthaccessinitiative-gpc-medical

The Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI) today announced agreements with GPC Medical Limited and Shanghai Jolly Medical Education Co., Ltd. that will reduce the price of the neonatal bag and mask resuscitator and the neonatal resuscitation training mannequin by 30-61 percent. These deals are expected to expand access to products that are vital to treating birth asphyxia, a condition which causes an estimated 662,000 newborn deaths annually. CHAI’s work establishing these partnerships was made possible through financial support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is part of the efforts to implement the recommendations of the UN Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women’s and Children’s Health.

The UN Commission on Life-Saving Commodities’ recommendations called for increased access to high-quality, affordable resuscitation products as part of a set of essential commodities for women’s and children’s health. Asphyxia-related deaths can be prevented with the correct training and equipment; however, the products needed for high-quality training and patient care are often unavailable in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with pricing and supply security commonly cited as barriers to access.

Basic Artificial Resuscitator-Infant

AN108 – Basic Artificial Resuscitator-Infant

Under the first agreement, GPC Medical Limited has agreed to make the Basic Resuscitator-AN108 available for US $7.85-$9.50 per unit free on board (FOB), depending on order quantities, which represents a 53-61 percent price reduction versus the market-leading product in LMICs. This pricing is guaranteed through April 2018, with the possibility of extension. Pricing will be honored for any product purchases that will be distributed in 75 eligible countries, regardless of the purchasing entity. GPC’s product meets WHO product and quality specifications for the neonatal bag and mask resuscitator.

“Access to resuscitation equipment remains low in Ethiopia and across the developing world,” said Professor Bogale Worku, Executive Director of the Ethiopian Pediatrics Society. “Ensuring access to neonatal bag and mask resuscitators and mannequins is critical to reducing the 28,000 asphyxia-related deaths in Ethiopia. By making these products more accessible, we can ensure that health workers have the training and the necessary equipment to effectively resuscitate a newborn suffering from asphyxia.”

Under the second agreement, Shanghai Jolly Medical Education Co., Ltd. has developed a new resuscitation mannequin under the MedMod brand—the JY/J-Mbaby Baby Jack Newborn Baby Simulator. Shanghai Jolly Medical Education Co., Ltd. has agreed to make the simulator available for US $42 per unit ex works (EXW), which represents a 30 percent price reduction compared to the market-leading product in LMICs. This pricing is guaranteed through March 2018, with the possibility of an extension depending on sales volumes achieved. Pricing will be honored for any product purchases that will be distributed in 74 eligible countries—the 75 Countdown countries excluding the People’s Republic of China—regardless of the purchasing entity. To ensure that the product meets resuscitation training standards, the Nigerian Society of Neonatal Medicine (NISONM) conducted an assessment of the Jolly Medical mannequin to assess its functionality and overall suitability in LMICs.

“Increased access to training mannequins will ensure sustainability and facilitate scale-up of resuscitation training programmes in Nigeria,” said Professor Chinyere Ezeaka, of the Neonatology Unit, Lagos University Teaching Hospital, and National President of NISONM. “The Jolly Medical mannequin represents a high-quality, durable, and affordable option for resuscitation trainers, and meets NISONM’s standards for use in resource-limited settings.”
